holiday vacation

you know...are these things supposed to be all sweet and nice...blogs? I don't know.

we are in the midst of snow and cold...Papa Alan and Grandma Lizbeth are here with Elizabeth's brother Tom...it has been an enjoyable visit...Tera's sister Keri and her husband, Tim (and their two kids, Kyle and Tyler) left on Monday. it was a packed house, to be sure...

here are some highlights, sweet and sour:
  • sitting with Tom in his lair (our basement) discussing the merits of being jobless, and how it benefits the artist over PBRs and Busch Light...
  • Tyler's pink eye...that Emma ended up getting...
  • Korin's ear infection...
  • tobogganing through the Grumbach's field...
  • meals...turkey (of course), pork chops, roast, tacos and cornbread, chili, blueberry pancakes, egg nog french toast, burgers, BBQ salmon (w/alder chips), biscuits and gravy (a new Christmas morning tradition in my house, I'll have you know)...
  • Tom's insistence on doing all the dishes (yesterday, he had the day off)...
  • having the homefires almost always lit...
  • the trials and and tribulations of potty training Nicholas..."I peed in my ballarina!" (to fully understand this joke, you need to know about Nicholas's obsession with the tutu that Korin wore for her ballet recital in Omak two years ago; he now calls it his ballarina, and wears it with pride)...
  • Tim and John's tangle over Tyler's Honey Nut Cheerios...
  • the subsequent apologies over Long Islands & Rainiers at the Curlew Saloon...
  • small town basketball games (back to back, Friday and Saturday)...
  • concession stand food...
  • Christmas presents: clogs that don't fit for Tera, electronic games for the kids, LL Bean gloves for me, and an early birthday present, a combination hardhat, ear-protection for woodcutting...
  • Papa Alan's enthusiasm...for all things practical...
  • successfully mailing out "holiday" greeting cards (missed the "Christmas" deadline)...
  • missing my brother's birthday party in Ephrata...

Hope you all had more positives than negatives this holiday...here's to the same in the new year...
