November

This has been a hectic month, and I'm glad to have the Thanksgiving break coming up to relax and take some time to reflect on life. I've been particularly hard on myself at times this month. Much of what needed done in preparation for winter did not get done. A thick layer of snow had blanketed the fifth wheel before I could tarp it. There isn't enough wood in the woodshed. But mother nature seems to be giving me another chance. It is above fifty degrees today and I think I might be able to sneak a load of firewood out of the woods, and cover the RV before the next cold snap.

So, I haven't been writing much on this site. I've been blogging at another site, without including pictures, as an attempt to experiment with language more. A writing exercise, of sorts. It started out great, but lately, it's just another thing to feel like I'm neglecting. Two blogs, a family and a ranch! Ha. Ha. But today, I'm going to do another one of those overviews, with pictures to rectify the wrongs I've done to the this blog--my true favorite.

Working backwards, here are some of the notable happenings on the ranch this past month.

Sunday we went to church. The regular Sunday school teacher wasn't there, so I volunteered to take Emma and Annika and our neighbors' daughter, Matilda, back to play. Tera would have usually done it, but, frankly, I didn't feel like listening to a sermon. After that we got home and I folded clothes while watching the Seahawks. Tera spent the day in the kitchen washing what felt like a week's worth of dishes, and preparing a delicious meal--either fish chowder or meatloaf. I can't remember. They were both served this weekend and they were both delicious. That evening we took the three-wheeler and trailer out to the upper end of the barley field for a family bonfire.

Earlier the week before, Korin and I cut a small load of birch and stacked all the branches in a pile for just this purpose. Saturday we did quite a few little chores--fed the cows, and such. That afternoon, we went across the road and cut a dead standing Douglas fir to take to mom in Ephrata--but it didn't even make two rows in the bed of the Ford.

The weekdays, these cold, short winter weekdays are usually the same old same old. Wake up go to school. Come home. Eat dinner. Kids to bed. Then us. The routine can become monotonous, so forgive me if I only report on what happens on the weekends.

The weekend before last was Veterans' day and we went to Joe and Rebecca's house to celebrate my Mom's sixtieth birthday--which isn't officially until December 24th. The party was Saturday. It was a really great evening. I haven't seen my Mom so happy since I don't know how long. Her parents and siblings were there with bells on! The Cougs played Arizona State that night and won, to boot.

The weekend before was the eventful trip to Davenport with the Bull. So what do you know! It hasn't been all that long. Kind of a lame update, no real narrative, but you can go to rancherteacher.wordpress.com if you want to read lots of writing.
