Three to Go!

Well, here it is...the real truth. Where else are you going to bring a minutes old heifer calf to dry off and warm up after being pulled from her first-time momma? The laundry/bathroom, of course. And why not use the laundry for a base? It's bound for the washer eventually, right?

Yes, this weekend the last of the heifers bore a healthy calf. She had a bit of trouble coming out, took some pulling, but not much. And now we've got a strong calf and good mother out in the corrals, patiently waiting out the rest of winter, looking forward to spring.

That leaves three out of eleven yet to calve. The one we call "daughter" should be any day now. "Crazy" may not calve after all; she's so ornery I wouldn't be surprised if the bull all but passed on trying to breed her last spring. And lastly, 22, the oldest of the herd--tough old bird. This will be her last calf. But she won't be full term until April or May. The last of the off schedule births, due to our steep learning curve...allowing the bull to hang out with the herd, full time, up until two years ago.

Almost done with calving.

Look out farming!
