The Day Before the Last Day of Spring Break

With the sawmill temporarily out of commission and needing a visit from Dr. Gary, my friendly neighborhood mechanic, we were somewhat aimless this morning.  We needed more lumber to finish the project, but we had plenty of framing we could have done.  Instead we pondered window type and placement, tentatively settling for four plexiglass windows along the top of the West and East sides.  We unanimously agreed to commission Papa Alan with the job.  About then, Bodie showed up to help us raise the West side that Tera and I had toe-nailed into place, last thing, the day before.  Somehow we ended up with a ten foot high wall!  With the help of my cousin Felicia, Maureen, Tera, Bodie, his daughter and Korin, we got it up and braced! Just as we were finishing that up, Gary pulled in to help us out with the mill.  By noon we were back in business, with two big sixteen foot logs to slice up.  Rolling a 28 inch diameter Douglas fir onto the deck of the sawmill is quite a task for three people.  We kept remarking, sarcastically, how glad we are that the old tractor with a loader isn't running.  But, cut by cut, the log was whittled away into lumber for our dairy shed.  Below are pictures of all the lumber we could get out of two logs, rendering uneven cylinders into "perfectly square" boards creates quite a bit of "waste" (read, firewood!); and the two sides we've managed to get into place.  One more day of spring break!  We'll see what we can get done!
