Nicholas, on a Mission

Today...Monday morning...I woke up at 5:30 but lay in bed 'til six. Nicholas was the first kid to wake up. Little did I know, he had ulterior motives...

A few weeks back it just so happened that Nicholas was ready to go when I was walking out the door. He asked if he could come with me (usually the kids ride the bus) and I said yes. Come to find out, that caused a big stink with Emma and Korin. Well, last week, he tried it again and the girls caught wind of it. I was running five minutes late and that gave the girls time to finish getting ready to go.

Back to this morning. Nicholas was a man on a mission. A silent mission. He kept glancing over at me, checking my progress. When I was putting on my shoes, I heard him ask Tera if his lunch was ready yet. "No," she replied. "Can I help you make it?" he asked. I was proud. He knew what he wanted and he'd thought of a constructive way to make it happen. "Mom, where's my coat?" Smile. When he found out that it was left in the van, he just added another fleece layer to his attire. " Is my backpack all packed?" he asked. He went about double checking for his homework folder. By the time I was ready to go, Nicholas had his boots on, his backpack over his shoulders and a wisp of hair sticking from under his stocking cap over his forehead.

"Are you coming with me?" I asked.

"Shhh...Not so loud," he said.

Korin was in the shower and Emma was busy deciding on an outfit. His mission was almost complete. We grabbed out stuff and got in the car. I haven't heard if the girls were affected too greatly by it.

This is going to be the challenge with these four kids--sharing our time, and doling it out evenly. We've tried to explain; we've tried to be fair, and it's worked out. So far, so good. But I have a suspicion that tomorrow morning there will be a little girl or two watching me--and Nicholas--our of the corner of her eye.
