The Last Day Before Turning the Cows Out

Didn't get a chance to take photos of our progress on the milking shed yesterday.  After school, Tera and I worked until I had trouble seeing the chalkline for our last cut, but we got our last length of siding fixed into place before the day ended.  This morning we did some maintenance on the corrals before feeding and sorting the mommas and yearlings from the calves.  It was the slickest branding has ever gone...for me, that is.  I'm no longer intimidated by any of the aspects of the event..the branding, tagging, vaccinating, or banding.  We had some great help today, from Jenn and Chris Rivera and Alan Hoffmiester, my father-in-law.  It was a family affair, today...and it worked out quite well.

Tera wanted a "dutch door" for her entrance to the milking shed, so that's what we worked on today.  The top half was no trouble, but the bottom part, fought us tooth and nail.  We managed to finish but not until around six p.m.  After that, we loaded the truck with hay for tomorrow, our last feeding of the year; we'll turn the cows out tomorrow to fend for themselves until fall.  Finally came in around seven, and sat down to a delicious dinner of chicken strips and carrot sticks.

Here are some photos of the day:
